Root to Recovery

Surviving a root canal procedure is not as much of a nightmare as you would imagine. Root canals have been known to get a bad reputation because of all the misinterpretations and wrong information about them. Some patients come out of their procedures so calm they most of the time fall asleep. This type of dental infection includes tissues in your root canal area of your tooth and may range from discomfort to severe pain. People tend to focus on the pre-treatment pain more than the relieving after effects which can lead to the un-pleasantries of getting a root canal. It is wise to know that there are things to expect after getting a root canal procedure and you need to be aware of what exactly may come along with it.

After Care and The Healing Period. While the infected part of your tooth has been removed, there are still periods of prolonged healing. Your body is constantly trying to repair the area that surrounds the tooth after your procedure is complete and you could experience symptoms of earaches, un-wellness and facial swelling on the inside and out. If you experience subtle symptoms it actually recommended you continue on with your normal routine as soon as your anesthesia has faded away. You may eat and drink normally, however if you experience pain when chewing, your dentist can reduce the biting forces on that tooth to lower the blow you may feel while eating. As far as antibiotics, not all infected root canals require them. In fact, some antibiotics actually do more harm than good in this situation because they could potentially lead to the growth of drug-resistant bacteria.

Follow Up and Prevention. After the root canal procedure is complete a permanent filling will be placed on top of it. Be sure to be gentle and take proper care to your newly operated tooth as well as maintaining your regular dental check-ups so your dentist can monitor your healing. We cannot stress enough the importance of your dental visits. These visits help in detecting early alternatives to root canals even if there are inevitable inherent risks involved.
