3 Brushing Mistakes That I Bet You Didn’t Know were Mistakes

Recently, we posted about the five most common mistakes that people make when brushing their teeth. I’m sure everyone agreed that the five listed were bad habits. However, there are three additional brushing mistakes that I think will surprise you. Below are the list of 3 brushing habits that will surprise you that they are actually bad for you.

Brushing Too Hard. I know when I was younger my parents told me in order to do a good job of brushing my teeth I had to brush hard. However, this is not true. Be gentle with your teeth. Brushing harder will not remove more leftover food along with the bacteria that loves to eat it, gentle brushing is all that’s needed. Too much pressure may also damage your gums.

Brushing Right After Eating. If you feel the need to clean your teeth immediately after eating or drinking, wait at least 60 minutes before brushing, especially if you have had something acidic like lemons, grapefruit or soda. Instead, drink water or chew sugarless gum with the ADA Seal of Acceptance which will help clean your mouth while you’re waiting to brush your teeth.

Using a Brush with Hard Bristles. Soft bristles are a safe bet. And be mindful to be gentle, especially where your gums and teeth meet, as you brush. Talk to your dentist about what kind of toothbrush is best for you.
