How Stress Affects Oral Health

Research has shown that stress can negatively impact not only our physical and mental health, but also our oral health as well. Our bodies were genetically made to handle bouts of stress when necessary, however, prolonged exposure to elevated amounts of stress can be a severe threat to our health completely. Here are some examples, warning signs and physical symptoms of how stress can negatively affect our oral wellness:

Poor Diet & Nutrition. Having a diet that is low in nutrition and high in fat, sugar, sodium and any other harmful ingredients, can lead to a lack of vitamins and nutrients your body needs to survive and function properly. A poor and unbalanced diet is linked with poor overall health as well as increased tooth decay.

Poor Oral Hygiene. Stress can cause us to neglect ourselves in many aspects of our lives. Oral health is one of the many areas that can be forgotten or overlooked. Not brushing or flossing regularly will lead to increased risk of periodontal disease, tooth decay and frequent mouth sores.

Dry Mouth. Stress is linked with dry mouth; and saliva is what helps keep our mouths balanced, free of bacteria and harmful food particles. Dry mouth may also be caused by medications prescribed for stress, anxiety or depression.

Poor Habits. Frequent tobacco, alcohol, or any toxic consumption can be a means of “coping” for some people when it comes to stress, but these habits increase the risk of gum disease, tooth decay as well as oral cancers.

Lack of Dental Appointments. Stress can cause us to forget appointments or tasks we need to take care of, but missing regular dentist appointments can put your oral health at risk. Going to the dentist not only provides preventative care but also makes sure your mouth is healthy, clean and free of disease.

How To Keep Good Oral Health When Stressed

  • Practice relaxing techniques or a self-care plan to help manage difficult times.
  • Keep up with oral hygiene home care.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for exams and cleanings.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet and drink plenty of water.
